Every once in a while I come across something I have to post, not because it’s interesting, but because it literally exists nowhere else on the Web.  This is one of those times.  I was reading tonight for comprehensive tests when I came across this quote attributed to Augustine:

“It is no arrogant stoutness; it is our faith. It is no pride; it is devotion. It is no presumption; it is God’s promise.”

It turns out this is an oft-quoted-never-cited remark by Augustine that I just felt had to be wrong because I’m becoming rather familiar with Augustine’s views on assurance. So I decided to track it down. Thanks to the wonder of Google Books I’ve been able to confirm that the quote is SPURIOUSLY attributed to Augustine.  He never said it, and in case you’re interested here’s what I’ve learned: (more…)
