Every once in a while I come across something I have to post, not because it’s interesting, but because it literally exists nowhere else on the Web. This is one of those times. I was reading tonight for comprehensive tests when I came across this quote attributed to Augustine:
“It is no arrogant stoutness; it is our faith. It is no pride; it is devotion. It is no presumption; it is God’s promise.”
It turns out this is an oft-quoted-never-cited remark by Augustine that I just felt had to be wrong because I’m becoming rather familiar with Augustine’s views on assurance. So I decided to track it down. Thanks to the wonder of Google Books I’ve been able to confirm that the quote is SPURIOUSLY attributed to Augustine.
